The Gambler Returns: The Luck of the Draw (1991)
Kenny Rogers proves that a good thing need not end with just a hit song as he reprises his role as Brady Hawkes in the fourth film of “The Gambler” series.
The old west, Gambler, Brady Hawkes returns to fight for his rights as his primary form of income and livelihood is threatened when a law that will outlaw the practice of gambling is about to be passed. Seeing as this seems to be the end of gambling in the territory, the card players decide to go out in style and there will be one more tournament. The price of admission for this game is one hundred thousand dollars (a fortune for the period).
In the classic American west gambling and prostitution go together like oreo’s and milk. Hawkes is staked in this game by Burgandy Jones (played by Reba McEntire), a madame who runs the local house of prostitution, along with four other madams. After a contentious game Hawkes winds up as one of the last two players standing. He defeats a player named Cantrell Brady. Of course he is a sore loser and theft and murder cannot be far behind in an attempt to retrieve the money that he lost Hawkes.
Campy is the best word to describe this film. That is not always a bad thing. Reba McEntire is always entertaining, and this movie does keep you watching. It is not exactly “The Sting”, but is still a good way to while away a couple hours.
