The Gambler and the Lady (1952)
No matter how fast you run it seems that your past always moves much faster. The Gambler and the Lady is a crime drama that centers around the desire to escape the past for something better.
Dane Clark plays a successful British gambler and nightclub owner by the name of Jim Forester. His skill at gambling has brought him fabulous wealth, but he desires more out of life than simply money. Forester lusts for position and title as well. In other words, he wants to become a member of the British nobility. This yearning comes from more than the fame that comes with a hereditary title, his longing to become part of the nobility comes from his falling in love with one of the nations more visible and available women of the noble class. For Forester to successfully court this blue-blood, he must mend his ways and turn his back on his gambling, carousing lifestyle. There is one more hitch to winning the hand the maiden, he must also break-up with his current girlfriend, who is a singer at a tavern. She doesn’t take the end of the relationship well, and her jealous, murderous rage is played out throughout the film. To add to these troubles, gangsters from his gambling past try to muscle in and take over his club.
If you spend your time watching “Turner Classic Films” on cable television, this is just the sort of cinematic offering that will appeal to you.
