Showgirls (1995)
Showgirls was a drama that almost became a film about murder. Considering the sheer number of careers this single movie nearly put to death, one could suggest that it was a serial killer.
For those of you who grew up on the show “Saved by the Bell” Jesse Spano (Elizabeth Berkley) is all grown up and willing to show her naughty bits in an attempt to shed her squeaky clean, Saturday morning image. Berkley portrays a young drifter named Nomi Malone who makes her way to Las Vegas with the dream of fame and fortune. She quickly befriend a seamstress Molly (Gina Ravera), who works in a casino on one of the stage shows. In the early goings Nomi supports herself by being an exotic dancer. While working her shift at the gentleman’s club she meets the new lead showgirl for the Stardusts' show, Cristal Conners (Gina Gershon) and becomes enthralled at the glamorous life of the Vegas showgirl and determines to become one herself.
This is truly a horrible movie. The performance by Elizabeth Berkley is absolutely unsalvageable. The writing is chaotic and it is difficult to even find a plot until near the end of the film. The one bright spot in this disaster is the performance of Gina Gershon who seems to understand just how bad a movie this is. Watch this one at your own risk.
