Diamonds are Forever (1965)
James Bond in Vegas instead of Europe is kind of like watching Godzilla kick over Hollywood instead Tokyo. It is not something you expected to see, but you are glad when it happens.
The movie starts off with Bond returning from a successful against his nemesis, Blofeld. There is no rest for the wicked though, because upon his return there is already a case waiting for him. A princely sum of diamonds have been stolen from the South African mines, and a pair of assassins are now murdering everyone in the smuggling ring, one-by-one. Bond takes the name of Peter Franks and goes undercover as a diamond smuggler.
The trail leads Bond to the United States, specifically a Las Vegas casino. There is a twist though; Ernst Stavros Blofeld owns the casino from where he runs the smuggling ring. The ultimate end of Blofeld’s desire for diamonds, is that they will fuel a deadly laser satellite that will have the ability to destroy large targets from space, and allow Blofeld to hold the world hostage.
This is a Bond film at its best. Nobody has quiet played the part of 007 with the same flair, class and cool that Sean Connery brought to the character. Diamonds are Forever is a must see for any Bond fan. Our favorite British intelligence agent (combined with Lana Wood as one of the most irresistible “Bond Girls”) plying his trade against the backdrop of a glitzy, pre corporation, Las Vegas is just an irresistible draw.
