Casino Movie Review
Sometimes even the most dedicated gambler needs to take the cards and chips out of their hands. There are still ways to enjoy the atmosphere without actually playing the games, however. One such activity can be watching a movie. What is our recommendation? The 1995 classic Casino, of course: the epitome of the casino/gangster genre. Others may have done it before, but none have done it better.
Directed by Martin Scorsese, Casino seemed to be a bigger, badder version of Goodfellas. Robert DeNiro stars as Sam “Ace” Rothstein, who in reality is based on mobster Frank “Lefty” Rosenthal. This prolific film shows a time where the mob had total control of Las Vegas, and those in power were making millions upon millions of dollars from the casinos. The movie shows the peak and decline of mob power in Las Vegas, it shows Bugsy Seigel’s dream coming crashing to the ground.
The movie has everything that we want to see in a mob flick. The movie has violence, it has glitz, and it also has Joe Pesci and Sharon Stone rounding out a magnificent cast. Watching this movie really puts one into the dirty glamour that was 1970’s Las Vegas. It gives that feeling that you’re actually rubbing elbows with the Vegas elite of the 70s. If you want to experience the feeling that led so many into the world of gambling to begin with, rent or buy this film.
This movie was nominated for an Oscar and two Golden Globes, with the best drama performance by an actress award going to Sharon Stone for her performance as Ginger.
