European Roulette Rules and Strategies
European Roulette
European roulette is popular and easy to understand game. There is only one basic principle - Chance and Randomnicity. There are no special strategies or complex rules to play roulette - just bet and wait for the outcome on spun wheel.
History
The word "roulette" itself comes from French language and means "small wheel". It was firstly implemented by Blaise Pascal, a French scientist. He invented a primitive roulette as one of perpetual motion devices
Modern wheels - with red/black colors, wheel itself with pockets, the 0 and 00 - appeared in Paris casinos around 1796. The difference was that 0 was red and 00 was black (though they were't regarded as usual black and red numbers). Finally green color was assigned to zeros.
In 1842 Francois and Louis Blanc developed the idea by leaving only single "0" .The game was introduced in Hamburg and became very popular, replacing an earlier version that featured higher odds. This version of roulette is known now as a European roulette. The double-zero version is known as American one. It survived in the United States being much more popular than European version. It widely spread in the time of Californian Gold Rush.
Rules
Up to eight players can play roulette against the house represented by the dealer - croupier. Latter spins the roulette wheel and handles the wagers and payouts. In European roulette the wheel has 37 slots representing 36 numbers and one zero.
Zero rule is the rule, due to which bets on red, black, even, odd, low, and high are lost if the roulette ball comes to rest in the compartment marked zero (0).
How to play
Roulette is played when a small ball spins on a round wheel with numbered slots. When the wheel stops, the ball falls in one of the slots. Players can bet on a combination of numbers, predict which number the ball will land on and choose the color and oddness/evenness. The size of payoff and house edge depends on how the bets were placed.
You make bets by placing chips on the desired position on the table.
There are eight different kinds of bets available on the European Roulette table. Each type displaces a certain range of numbers and has its own payoff rate. The short lines of three numbers each are called rows on the board. The longer lines, each holding twelve, are called columns:
Bet Type |
Explanation |
Straight Up |
Bet directly on any single number (including zero) |
Split Bet |
Bet on the line between any two numbers. 0-1, 0-2, 0-3 combinations not allowed |
Street Bet |
Bet at the end of any row of numbers. A street bet covers three numbers |
Corner Bet |
Bet at the corner where four numbers meet. All four numbers are covered |
Line Bet |
Bet at the end of two rows at the intersection between them. A line bet covers all the numbers in either row, for a total of six |
Column Bet |
Betting in one of the boxes at the end of the columns covers all the numbers in that column, a total of twelve |
Dozen Bet |
Betting in the box marked 1st 12 covers numbers 1 to 12, 2nd 12 covers numbers 13 to 24, 3rd 12 covers numbers 25 to 36 |
Red/Black,Even/Odd,Low/High |
A chip placed in one of these six boxes covers the half of the board described in that box. Each box covers eighteen numbers. Low covers numbers 1 to 18. High covers numbers 19 to 36 |
The first five types of bets are all made on the numbered space or on the lines between them. They are called inside bets. The last three types are made on the special boxes below and to the right of the board and are called outside bets.
Bets disposed in the upper part of table are called racetrack bets. The minimum bet is 5 chips. It's a line of numbers in a racetrack shape. If you click on any number you will place bet on that exact number and two previous and two further numbers in line (i.e. if you click on 22 you place bet on 31, 9 (previous) and 18, 29 (further)).
Special Bets
Some casinos make your life easier and offer special bets. Special Bet is when you place multiple chips in specific positions on the table. Just click the bet name and press the DONE button when you are finished. You may select more than one Special bet. Names and definitions for these bets are explained in the table below.
