Joan Rivers
"Can we talk?" That particular catch phrase is as synonymous with the eighties as "Where's the Beef?" It was in that decade that most of us became acquainted with a talented actress and comedian named Joan Rivers.
Her story starts long before a decade dominated by Reaganonics and heavy metal Hairbands. The Brooklyn native was performing on the Vegas stage roughly about the same time that the Rat Pack was scurrying from casino to casino. The 60's also brought her national television fame as she was a regular guest on "The Tonight Show" and the "Ed Sullivan Show".
During the 80's she had become Johnny Carson's regular stand-in, and there were even rumors that she was being groomed to replace Johnny when his eventual retirement came about. Before that could happen though, she was given her own show in 1989. This television venture resulted in high ratings and an emmy.
In 1998, Rivers moved on to a position working for the E! cable network. She brought her daughter, Melissa, along for the ride and the two began hosting fashion specials. For the most part the two of them would poke fun at celebrities and their fashion mistakes. It was doing commentary about celebrity fashion where Joan put to rest her original catch phrase, "Can we talk?" was replaced it with the question, "So, who are you wearing?"
Joan Rivers has come full circle. In spite of the many years and ever twisting career path, she has come back to city who hosted her shows back in the early years, Vegas.
