Defendants under lock and key after being charged with the illegal operation and ownership of slot machines in Biloxi were released recently when the Judge in charge of making the decision said he believed their story. The defendants had claimed that they were ignorant of the law outlawing the machines, and believed they were in their rights to operate them. Biloxi raids that confiscate slot machines are nothing new; in fact, one Saturday night in 1917 a raid on a pool hall, two restaurants downtown and the Rivera resulted in the seizing of one arm bandits as well.
The judge, F. W. Elmer, Jr, was highly criticized for his decision by the paper, which stated that he has set back the war on slots.
